"Oh so sweet".....Why are Sweet Potatoes so special?

Why are Sweet Potatoes so special and how can my dog benefit from having this tasty vegetable in their diet?

A little bit of history: The delicious Sweet Potato originated from South America in the early 15th century, during the expedition of Christopher Columbus across America he simply fell in love with this tasty orange root vegetable, so much so he decided to pop one in his bag and bring back to Spain to where the birth of the Sweet Potato in Europe began.

Even for dog’s sweet potatoes are increasingly on the menu - even at BUNCH! They not only taste heavenly good, but they also contain many secret nutritional benefits to help your dog thrive.

Did you know: Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene and thus support your dog's eyesight and coat and skin health condition. In addition, they also have a positive effect on your dog’s digestion, this is due to their naturally high offerings of fibre, Vitamins C and B6, potassium, calcium, and iron, among many other essential vitamins and minerals.

Top Fact : Despite the name , sweet potatoes are not at all related to potatoes which we eat on a daily basis from fast food outlets. The sweet potato does not belong to the nightshade family, but to the Convolvulaceae set, known commonly as the bindweed or morning glory family, which makes them naturally taste sweeter and can even be consumed raw by your dog.

The Sweet Potatoes catching yellow/orange colour is thanks to their natural Beta-carotene which is within the vegetable.

Beta-carotene also acts as an antioxidant that helps reduce the risk of certain types of cancer while simultaneously providing protection against heart disease.

The most common symptoms of a serious Beta-carotene or Vitamin A deficiency include night blindness, poor skin quality, abnormal bone/teeth development, and abnormal reproductive development.

Rich source of fibre: One of the main benefits of adding fibre to a dog’s diet is to encourage regular, healthy bowel movements, alleviate constipation and also diarrhea, all these benefits can be achieved with the addition of the tasty vegetable.

Thankfully at BUNCH we add this delicious vegetable into many of our Complete Dry RAW diets and even our Superfood Treats!
